President, Kaye Hicks
I was born in rural Michigan and attended Saginaw Valley State College. I relocated to the Detroit metropolitan area and worked in hospital administration for Henry Ford Hospital. I started sailboat racing in the early 1980’s and it remained a part of my life for many years. I married my husband, Steve, in September of 1983. After having our son, Ian, he was brought up in a sailing culture, which proved to be beneficial in his later development, as he was accepted as a sailing instructor for a noted summer camp in Michigan. I retired from Henry Ford Hospital in 2014 and sailed our boat south to Fort Pierce, Florida; later purchasing a home in Vero Beach.
After learning that a new pipe and drum band was forming, I volunteered to learn the tennor drum and played for several years. Joyce Smith, one of the founding members of the Scottish Society asked me to become the Treasurer and I accepted. While I was a Board member of the Scottish Society, I assisted in forming the Scottish Society Band and performed at several functions. Two years ago I accepted the position of President. My Scottish heritage is from my Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather on my Mother’s side, who were born in Scotland and moved to Ireland, and then immigrated to Canada.
I have discovered my family clan is Stewart, and I look forward to traveling to Scotland this August for an extended visit and hope to learn more about my Scottish roots. In the last several years the Scottish Society has gained many new members, added new events and endeavored to make our traditional gatherings lively and enjoyable by adding additional features. I look forward to working with our current Board and new members to host all of our events and further develop our Society.
