The Legend of the Scottish Thistle

Long ago, the Scots fought off Norse invaders for control of the land.  Legend says that the men of Norse King Haakon, trying to surprise the Scots clansmen in a nightime raid, stepped on the local thistles, crying out in pain and alerting the Scots, who fought off the invaders.  And so it was that the thistle - strong, tenacious, difficult to uproot - became a symbol of Scotland.
